A Brief Guide to Windscreen Replacement

Blog

Your windscreen does not solely work to let you see the road when you are driving. Instead, it is designed to keep all flying debris, from leaves and twigs to bugs and pebbles, from flying directly into your eyes and impeding your vision! Hence, this auto part needs to be in optimum condition at all times, as any cracks will not only inhibit your line of sight but these damages put the windscreen at risk of collapsing, which can harm you and your passengers.

Nonetheless, some motorists tend to put off windscreen replacement until the very last minute under the guise that the integrity of the glass is not compromised. To avoid any unfortunate consequences, here is a brief motorists' guide to getting a windscreen replacement.

How can you determine if you need windscreen replacement?

Indubitably, the presence of cracks is a sure-fire sign that your windscreen needs to be replaced post haste. However, since cracks manifest in several ways, you could be convincing yourself that the crack on your windscreen is innocuous and that you can keep driving your vehicle safely. To ensure you are not putting yourself and other road users at risk of an accident, there are a few things that you can establish to determine how serious your windscreen problem is.

First, the number of cracks on the windshield. Multiple cracks and fissures will jeopardise the sturdiness of the windscreen making it vulnerable to breaking off, even when minor pressure is exerted onto it. Secondly, the positioning of the cracks. If cracks are forming directly in front of you it is time to stop driving and seek windscreen replacement. Thirdly, the presence of pitting, which refers to indentations on the windscreen caused by gravel, hailstones and other forms of debris pelting the glass.

What goes into the windscreen replacement process?

Contrary to popular belief, windscreen replacement is quite a straightforward process! What many motorists are surprised to learn is that they can drive their vehicle the next day! The first step in the process is the extraction of the broken glass. The mechanic will cut away the trim that holds the windscreen in place and then employ suction cups to prevent shattering of the glass so that they can extract the entire broken windscreen.

Secondly, the mechanic will move on to cleaning the pinch weld, which is the gap the windscreen glass is fitted into when it is in place. Cleaning is necessary to eliminate grime, dust and lingering urethane adhesive. Once is clean, fresh urethane will be applied right before the new glass is installed.

The last step of windscreen replacement is fitting of the new glass into the pinch weld and letting it cure for several hours. You will then be advised not to slam any doors for a couple of days so that the windscreen can set securely.
